And those are two of the things I love most. . . :)....just finished "The Ganymeade Protocol" , a novel of modern piracy, anarchism, sexual ambiguity, general weirdness, and hope by Don Elwell (also known as Mungo on tribe.net, and a longtime burner). Its a great depiction of sliding relationships without angst or guilt and the potential for a really free society. You can dl a copy for cheap at www.wildshorepress.com.
Its a great read from a fellow burner and I recommend it, (go download the damn thing....writers need all the support they can get) but i was wondering if folks would post other recommendations for literature outside of Heinlein and Robert Rimmer ?

Sun, May 4, 2008 - 6:44 PMThe Xenogenesis Trilogy (Dawn, Adulthood Rites, Imago) by Octavia Butler - Wherein aliens "save" humanity from nuclear holocaust, said aliens have 3 sexes instead of 2, and require all 3 for sexual reproduction.
Brainchild by David Jay Brown - Wherein one of the central characters is an alien who is hermaphroditic and bisexual.
Orlando by Virginia Woolf - Wherein the immortal central character changes from man to woman halfway through the novel. Also a great movie.
I understand that Ursula LeGuin has also played with these themes, though I have never read anything....

Re: literature and sexual ambiguity
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 6:52 PMAnything by the three classical Greek tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides). Masculinity vs. femininity and perverse mixtures and reversals thereof are major themes in practically every play. Of course they're not exactly upbeat and hopeful and there's not a lot of sex per se.

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 5:27 AMOrlando was a fun classic bit of gender bending.
And thank you for the book suggestion! I'll have to find it in paper (I just can't read books on the computer).
