quick question just for info

topic posted Fri, May 9, 2008 - 8:34 AM by  pseudonym
a journalist recently suggested that many of the poly folk she's interviewing seem to be in "analytical careers like some form of counseling or computers"

I find being in NYC that I have many creatively-inclined poly friends as well

what do you do for a living?

Heh, I work for a mail order witchcraft supply company and generally do all sorts of things, mostly computer and phone system related but also a host of other things.

I'm not sure how much I'd read into the journalists observations though as there could be a host of reasons why the poly folk she's interviewed tend to be in analytical careers. :)

actually I found out that she got that tidbit from Elizabeth Sheff's sociological research findings on polyamory.

Reading her work, there are some methodoligical issues that make me question how valid and/or generalizable a conclusion that is but at least the reporter wasn't just making sh*t up so good for her.

So, who is this journalist? What publication did she/will she publish her findings in? Just for info...

she's a freelance journalist who decided to do a magazine-length piece and then pitch it around. She originally thought she'd sell it to the Village Voice here in NYC but right now it's being reviewed by the editors at Glamour. I know. But it's actually a good piece (and they so seldom are.) She actually let me read the finished product before pitching it, which was a minor journalistic miracle. Nothing terribly salacious or pigeonholing, though I admittedly have a slightly higher tolerance for such things than most. I just hope the editors don't shred it.

Her goal was to discuss poly in ways that the mainstream might be able to wrap their brains around and to evidence that poly folk are of all ilk just like everyone and just choose a different approach to relationships.

Will give a shout if/when it gets published.

Recent graduate with a Master of Public Health in Global Health Practice, looking for work. Previous jobs have been almost exclusively counseling and/or computers. Similar story for my wife.

Full-time retail manager by day, with occasional spurts of selling vintage clothing on ebay. I'd someday like to have a store of my own, something I think of as "Buffalo-Exchange-for-fat-girls-meets-Shabby-Chic" (basically a plus-size clothing consignment store that also sells restored/revamped used furniture and home accessories). Yes, I'd like to think it is possible to make a living from my love of thrift store shopping!

Ongoing student of psychology (yeah, one of these days I hope to have PhD before my name) and currently doing technical phone support so... eh... guilty as charged on both counts.

I do statistical reporting and some application development for the local school system, so I guess my job involves a bit of both creativity and analysis. However, I find the creativity aspect of my job to be pretty limited, and tend to gravitate towards more creative endeavors in the rest of my life (writing, tinkering with functional programming, learning to make my own techno music, and I used to draw voraciously as a child...or perhaps "way younger child" would be more accurate :) ).
